The small town of Ambleside is located in the Lake District and over recent years it has become a popular are with tourists, due to the large selection of things to see and do, including shops, cinema and restaurants. This area offers you the opportunity to take a ferry ride and explore the local area from the water, or during the summer months you can even explore the area from a horse drawn carriage. There is a good selection of shopping centres and ancient ruins which makes Ambleside the ideal destination for couples and families. Although this is a busy area there are still plenty of places where you can sit back and unwind.
The area of Ambleside has a vast array of choice when it comes to finding something to do when it is raining, and there is something available to suit all tastes.

The Chocolate Factory at Hawkshead will be a popular attraction with people of all ages. This attraction allows children the unique experience to make some delicious chocolate creations whilst the adults can relax. Everything that the children create can be taken home including the apron and hair net that they wore during the experience.
Brantwood at Coniston will be an inspiring day out as it is the former home of writer and artist John Ruskin. The house is perched high above Coniston Water and it offers a fascinating insight into the world of the artist and writer who spent twenty-eight years living in this house. The house is still home to his furniture and his personal treasures. Even nowadays the house contains the character of its famous resident. There are various exhibitions within the home which is now owned by the National Trust.
There is a vast amount of things for couple to see and do in Ambleside. There are several walks around this area including a number of hill walking routes for the more adventurous.
The Ruskin Museum will be a great day out for people who want to learn about the local area. This museum is home to a vast array of exhibits that tell the story of the local area dating back to 1901.
A visit to St Oswald’s church will be a good way to spend a bit of time as it is the home of the tombstone of William Wordsworth and also his wife Mary. This church is one of the most visited in the area and it is literally a shrine.
It is still possible to have a lot of fun in Ambleside even if you are wanting to save some pennies whilst you are here.
There are a number of forests in this area where you can enjoy a relaxing walk, and children can run around and explore or perhaps even build a den or a tree house.
Grizedale Forest is a large four hundred hectare forest that is located between Whinlatter and Grizedale. This forest is the ideal location to have an adventurous day as there are a large number of trails to explore and lots of lovely views to enjoy including mountains and lakes. There are forty amazing sculptures spread throughout the forest which children can enjoy finding and exploring.
Fell Foot Park is the ideal location for a relaxing day out as you can enjoy a picnic in this country park whilst children can run around and explore or enjoy some family games. Children can enjoy spending time paddling in the lake, playing in the playground or feeding the friendly ducks.
Townend will be a fascinating day out for people of all ages. This attraction is an atmospheric farmhouse that is home to a range of quirky objects and a selection of fascinating stories. The exhibitions in this farmhouse dates back more than four hundred years. A visit to this farmhouse will enable you to see the spectacular Troutbeck Valley which Beatrix Potter described as her favourite place. When you enter the farmhouse, you are welcomed by the real fire and the collection of domestic tools which would have been used here.
There are a number of attractions within this area that celebrate the famous Beatrix Potter. One of these attractions is Beatrix Potter gallery that located at Hawkshead. This gallery is housed in a quirky building and it displays original works and watercolours created by Beatrix Potter, and now owned by the National Trust. This gallery is the only place where you can get up close to the original illustrations and step inside the famous tales.
The Armitt Museum is located in Ambleside and it has a permanent exhibition that is dedicated to Beatrix Potter.
