There’s plenty to do in Carmarthenshire. Our travel guide will give you some ideas to get you on your way with things to do and places to see.
If you are considering a trip to South Wales in your motorhome this summer, then don’t neglect from your itinerary one of the most scenic and historic areas of the country, Carmarthenshire.
Carmarthenshire is one of the oldest counties in Wales and has a vast array of castles, beautiful beaches and picturesque gardens. It was home to Celtic Iron Age settlements and was also the most westerly point of the Roman Empire. Known as the Garden of Wales, the country is also a stronghold of the welsh language.
It’s also home to Dylan Thomas’ Writing Shed. The Boathouse in Laugharne, Wales, was where Dylan Thomas (main picture) lived with his family during his last four years between 1949 and 1953. The house is set in a cliff overlooking the Tâf estuary and is where he wrote many of his major pieces.
If it’s countryside and outdoor activities you are after you won’t be disappointed with what Carmarthenshire has to offer. There are lots of different gardens and parks available in the area, all with an abundance of wildlife. Dinefwr Park and Castle is located in Llandeilo where there is wild deer and badger watches, as well as scenic walks and guided tours.
For more wildlife adventures you can explore WWT Llanelli Wetland Centre where there are all kinds of different environments, attracting lots of different birds, butterflies, and insects. There are also canoeing and bike trail activities available at the centre.
If you would like to breath in some of the county’s art then have a look at Oriel King Street Gallery where there is a new exhibition every two months, displaying some of the best known artists in Wales. A visit to Heavenly is also a ‘number one’ for many visitors who want to sample some of the finest ice cream.
There are plenty of seasonal events and festivals in the area dotted throughout the year. These include: a Local Produce Market, starting in March and held every third Saturday of the month offering lots of different organic vegetables, flowers, jams and chutneys as well as homemade crafts and accessories.
In April, there is a Still Life, Post Industrial Age exhibition at the King Street Gallery and in June there is a Midsummer Celebration at Gwili Railway; this is a new event which features a High Tea with Prosecco Vintage Tea Party – a must for vintage lovers. Visitors to Carmarthenshire can also appreciate the Classic Transport Day at Gwili Railway, featuring Steam Locomotives and traction engines – motorbikes, agricultural vehicles, buses and commercial vehicles.
