Laika Motorhomes 2024: Celebrating 60 years of Italian innovation

Laika motorhomes have proudly been a part of Erwin Hymer Group for 25 years. United in their incomparable passion for motorhomes, Laika and HYMER joined forces in 1999, forging an elite combination of Italian design and German engineering.

Despite this long-standing partnership, Laika is still relatively new to the UK market. While its newness means the brand is less familiar to many Brits, Laika has been delivering exceptional motorhomes for over sixty years. So, let’s explore Laika’s rich history and uncover what has earned it such a stellar reputation across Europe.

The history of Laika

The Laika motorhome brand was first created 60 years ago. In the midst of the cold war, when the space race was forming a new vision for the future of travel, Giovambattista Moscardini produced his first Laika camper. Aptly named after the dog that was sent to space, Laika was formed in a time of peak technological innovation.

In 1964, Moscardini named the first caravan ‘Laika 500’. Its unique design included a telescopic mechanism that allowed the upper part of the caravan to be lowered while driving, making it more aerodynamic and comfortable to drive – even a Fiat 500 could tow it!

Since then, Laika has become an internationally recognised brand. Its first factory opened in 1974, with the iconic Ecovip and Kreos lines coming to life in the nineties, followed by their acquisition by Erwin Hymer Group at the turn of the century.

After much success across Europe, Laika finally arrived in the UK in 2023. Known for its impeccable craftsmanship and innovative design, the brand has quickly drawn attention, yet its recent introduction to the UK market means it remains something of a best-kept secret among motorhome enthusiasts. So, what sets Laika apart, and why should you consider it for your next adventure?

Kreos: The Laika motorhome for long-distance

The Kreos series is crafted for travellers who prioritise luxury and long-distance comfort. Known for its premium materials and advanced technology, the Laika Kreos embodies elegance and functionality. These models often come equipped with spacious layouts, high-end appliances, and climate control systems, making them ideal for year-round travel.

Like all the Laika lines, it comes in two main ranges: the Kreos Low-Profile and the Kreos Motorhome, each with their distinct features.

The Kreos L 5009, for example, is a well-equipped choice for those seeking comfort and practicality. Sleeping 4 and weighing in at 4,500kg, this popular model comes with a premium XL living space,  and a spacious maxi panoramic roof-lights in the living space and sleeping area, and a spacious rear garage. There’s even a built-in wine box (yes, it’s truly Italian).

Kosmo: The Laika motorhome for adventures

Laika’s ‘Kosmo’ is a real home from home, designed to deliver – in their words – “typical Laika comfort, adaptability and practicality”. The new Kosmo generation, created in partnership with renowned automotive designers GFG Style, has some fantastic features that make it great for a couples trip or family holiday. Built on a Fiat chassis, this spacious motorhome can hold 2-5 people, with a stand up height of 210cm through the common areas and plenty of room to relax.

For storage, the garage has a 150 kg payload, ideal for those travel essentials. Design wise, the roof scoop of the Kosmo, made of fibreglass single-block, creates a harmonious flow between the drivers cab and living space, making that panoramic skyview really stand out.

As with all the Laika motorhomes, the Kosmo has a signature style and attention to detail to be admired, but its advanced ergonomics are perhaps what sets it apart.

Ecovip: The Laika motorhome for travelling duos

The Ecovip is Laika’s longest lasting motorhome range. The first iteration came out in 1992, designed for those who seek both manoeuvrability and spaciousness. The Ecovip incorporates Italian-inspired furniture designs, creating interiors that are both elegant and practical.

As its longest-standing range, Laika places special emphasis on quality on the Ecovip, with refined materials, ergonomic layouts, and features like stepless living areas. It’s a perfect choice for travellers who appreciate sophistication and functionality.

The difference between the Ecovip and Kreos and Kosmo is that the Ecovip also comes in a campervan model, as well as the low-profile and motorhome. The top of the range, the Ecovip 645, is compact yet surprisingly spacious, equipped with everything you need for a getaway for two.
