The city of Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland and has a town that dates back to the medieval times and it is home to a number of Georgian properties. There is a vast amount of things for all ages to enjoy seeing and doing in Edinburgh.  When visiting the city, it is a good idea to take time to explore the city centre as it is home to some spectacular architecture.

Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle looks over the city and is situated high on a hill, which is known as Castle Rock.  The ‘Rock’ itself is thought to have heritage which dates back as far as The Iron Age.  This castle is home to the crown jewels of Scotland.  Edinburgh Castle is considered to be one of the most historic sites in Western Europe.

The Palace of Holyrood

The Palace of Holyrood is an interesting location to visit and it is one of the official residences of the Queen when she is in Scotland. A visit here will give you an insight into how the Queen uses it nowadays when she is carrying out official engagements in Scotland.

Camera Obscura and World of Illusions

Camera Obscura and World of Illusions is an interesting day out as you can enjoy panoramic views all around Edinburgh from the rooftop terrace. This attraction is home to five floors full of interactive optical illusions, fun things and tricks which includes a mirror maze, vortex tunnel and a shrinking room. This attraction will be popular with people of all ages and regardless of the weather.

The Royal Yacht Britannia

The Royal Yacht Britannia will be an interesting day out as this is the former floating palace of the Queen. This attraction has been voted as one of the best in Scotland for the past twelve years.  Britannia is one of the most famous ships in the world and it has sailed over a million miles and taken part in thousands of official visits during the forty years that is was in service.

Stewart Brewing

Stewart Brewing is located on an industrial estate on the south side of the city and they have been there since 2013. This brewery offers tours around the distillery and this will let you explore how the beverages are produced. After you have enjoyed the tour you can relax and taste some of the beverages in the bar area or on a nice day you can relax in the beer garden.

Pickering’s Gin Distillery

Pickering’s Gin is another distillery that is worth a visit and this distillery dates back 150 years.  This distillery is able to offer guided tour and tasting therefore you can explore how the gin is made and then also sample the produce.

Walks

There are a lot of walks around this area which are a great way to explore the rich history of the city and one of these walks is up the hill to Arthur’ Seat. Arthur’s Seat is one of four hill forts in the city and it dates back two thousand years. This hill is located in Holyrood Park and this area is rich in cultural heritage and has a rich diversity of volcanic geology and wildlife. This park has been classed as a site of special scientific interest.

Archivists’ Garden

Archivists’ Garden is a lovely area to visit and it is hidden behind the General Register House at the eastern side of Princes Street. These gardens are home to more than fifty-seven different species of plants, which are all connected in some way to the memory of Scotland.

City Art Centre

City Art Centre is a nine storey warehouse that is home to more than 4500 pieces of artwork which includes paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures and watercolours.

Days Out For Families In Edinburgh

The city of Edinburgh is very family friendly and there is a lot of things that children will enjoy seeing and doing.

Gilmerton Cove

Gilmerton Cove will provide an exciting day out; however, it does need to be prebooked due to the limited numbers that it can take. A visit here will let you explore one of the most curious heritage sites in Scotland. This cove has been an archaeological mystery for the past three hundred years. The cove is home to a number of passageways and chambers which lie beneath the street in the south side of the city.  Visit the attraction and join a guided tour which will let you explore and unravel the mysteries of this cove.

The Museum of Childhood

The museum of childhood is an exciting place for both adults and children as they can explore what it was like to grow up during the ages. The collections that this museum have include games and toys as well as showing what the routine of the school day was like and how their health compares with today.  There is a number of interactive displays which visitors can enjoy exploring. The puppets and the dressing up area will let you enjoy first hand some of the experiences.
