The city of Wakefield has a cathedral and is located in West Yorkshire to the eastern side of the Pennine Hills and on the banks of the River Calder. This city is surrounded by some spectacular scenery and the area is home to a rich history. This city is perfect for visitors of all ages as there is a vast amount of things to see and do, therefore there will be something to suit all tastes and budgets.
There is a great range of things to see and do indoors in the city of Wakefield therefore even when the weather is not so good there will be plenty to keep visitors entertained. For visitors who enjoy architecture a visit to Wakefield Cathedral which dates back more than a thousand years during which time people have been gathering there for prayers and worship. This cathedral is located in the heart of the city and is surrounded with various shops. Another attraction that is worth visiting is the National Coal Mining Museum, which is a unique place full of history. The collections at this museum dates back over several centuries and features things preserved above and also below ground. The unique mine tour at this attraction will take you one hundred and forty meters underground.
There is a range of romantic things that couple might want to see and do whilst visiting the city of Wakefield and these include a visit to Harry’s Bar, which is a lovely cosy little public house within the city and it’s the perfect location to enjoy some refreshments. For the couples who enjoy a spot of hiking Waterton Discovery Centre and Anglers Country Park will be the ideal day out. This park is very scenic, and it is home to a lake which is a great location for bird watching. Although Wakefield is a city it is still possible to enjoy a visit here whilst on a stricter budget as there is a lot of things that visitors can enjoy seeing and doing in the area for free. One of the attractions that is worth visiting is Hepworth Wakefield, which is an award gallery that David Chipperfield Architects designed, and it was opened during May 2011. This gallery is one of the biggest purpose built galleries within the UK in the past fifty years. This gallery celebrates the work of Barbara Hepworth who is one of the most significant sculptors in the UK and she was born and bred in the city. As well as the Hepworth collection the gallery is also home to collections that were once owned by the Wakefield Art Gallery. Another attraction that can make an interesting day out is a visit to Yorkshire Sculpture Park, which is a leading international centre for contemporary and modern sculptures and this park has been open for more than forty years and it is spread across five hundred acres. The ground where this park is located is part of the nearby Bretton Hall estate which dates back to the eighteenth century.
There is a lot of choice when it comes to things for families to see and do in the city of Wakefield. For the younger members of the family a visit to Cheeky Monkey would be a good way to spend a few hours. This attraction is home to a multi-level and colourful adventure play frame which features a range of different features to explore including the ball pit, slides and bridges where you can race around. This play centre also has a lovely area that is dedicated to the younger children with a smaller version of the larger frame. Another activity that families may enjoy doing in this area is exploring Thomas Clarence Park, which is home to more than sixty acres of space.
